Secondhand Smoke Facts

· 53,000 people die every year from illnesses related to secondhand smoke exposure.

· Secondhand Smoke has over 4,000 chemical compounds. Many of these chemicals are known to cause cancer.

· 150,000 to 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections (such as pneumonia and bronchitis) in children younger than 18 months of age.

· Food service workers have a 50% greater risk of lung cancer than the general population, in part, because of their exposure to secondhand smoke in the workplace.

· Constant exposure to secondhand smoke almost doubles the risk of having a heart attack
